Customer crowned British Middle-Distance Triathlon Champion with CurraNZ

    on October 17, 2024

This month’s customer prize goes to Stephen Derrett, a recreational triathlete who won the British Middle-Distance Championship in July and Ironman Copenhagen in near-record time for an amateur.

Here, he shares his fantastic story and immense results that are elevating him into the professional ranks next year.

“I’ve been competing in middle- and long-distance triathlon since 2015, starting out as a one-off challenge that became a hobby and is now something I pursue increasingly competitively.

Whilst I’m based in the UK, triathlon has taken me all over the world, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

My priority is always to eat healthily to support my training and, after a word-of-mouth recommendation several years ago, I tried CurraNZ. It certainly fitted with my approach as a naturally-sourced product that’s also screened by Informed-Sport.

It’s now become a product I trust to support my training, which takes up >20 hours per week alongside my job.

This year, my highlight was winning Ironman Copenhagen (pictured above and right) in a time of 7 hours 54 minutes - the second fastest Ironman time ever by an amateur athlete. After the 2.4-mile swim and 112-mile bike I was in fourth place, but a 2-hour 39-minute marathon allowed me to progress up to first place and cue the celebrations!

I also won the British Middle-Distance Championships in July. This is always a highly competitive race as the winner earns a licence to race in the elite field the following year, and as such attracts the very best athletes.

As with Copenhagen, I arrived off the bike just outside the top places but after a close-fought battle on the run, which pushed me to my limit, I managed to move into the lead and hold on to win by a narrow margin.

As a result of my successful 2024 season I’ll be racing in the professional field next year, although not viewing myself as a “professional” given I’ll still be working a full time job.

I plan to continue using CurraNZ - whilst there’s no silver bullet to performance, I do feel like it supports my recovery and reduces the number of illnesses I pick up, which allows for more consistent training and progress.
